Lêmba, du kôngo "Le" (qui a trait au caractère brillant, lumineux, au sens propre et figuré) et "mba" (énergie). Lêmba signifie, étymologiquement unité d'adaptation des énergies.
Dans l'ancien royaume Kôngo, Lêmba était une institution spirituelle et politique. Elle formait les cadres du royaume et intercédait spirituellement pour la gestion prévisionnelle des énènements.
